How it looks when you see on the street:The Cherokee is the baby sibling to the Grand Cherokee, which was long a market staple in the SUV class. The Cherokee faded away for a year or two and is now back as hybrid that references the Grand in its upright stance and boxy form. It’s instantly identifiable by it’s 7-slot grille.

How it makes you feel when you get in:The inside has a spartan feel.The action is centered around the 12.3 inch touch screen and the Chrysler orbit’s UConnect infotainment system, now onto version 5. This system uses over-the-air updates that include a 10 year lifespan under warranty. Standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, automated braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, drowsy driver detection, and blind spot monitoring with rear path detection.

How it drives:Cherokee puts up impressive fuel economy numbers, due to its hybrid only engine option at an average of 37 miles per gallon. It’s not as rugged or offroad driven, as say, the Wrangler, but has decent handling and presence on the road. All-wheel drive is standard.

Space for people and things:It’s made some gains on interior space — a roomy front seat and a backseat well-suited for medium sized people.

What to compare it to: Mazda CX 50, Ford Bronco,and the Honda CR-V.

How much does it cost: We drove the Cherokee Limited, which cost $43,590.The base price for the Limited model is $38,000, more at the top end of the Jeep-trim spectrum.Extras in our Limited Package included wireless charging, a heated steering wheel, and alarm, plus the addition of an added sunroof.
