How it looks when you see it on the street: The Tiguan was last fully spiffed up for the 2022 model year. It retains its reserved styling and linear VW grille that gives it post-modern flair. Its positioned between the larger Atlas SUV and smaller Taos. A third row adds versatility. The 2023 model added a new 19-inch wheel option. A two-row Tiguan plug-in hybrid is coming in 2025.

How it makes you feel when you get in: Tiguan carries over its reserved aesthetic into its subdued, spartan interior. Heated seats and the digital display are standard appreciated creature comforts. Tiguan is outfitted with lane-keeping assist, and the semi-autonomous driving mode Travel Assist. For the 2024 model year, it adds IQ.Drive to the Tiguan, which includes adaptive cruise control. The cabin interior balances light and space.

How it drives: The Tiguan has confident handling that breezes through the gears for an even driving experience. It’s got a sense of confidence. The front wheel drive version is 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Space for people and things: When a third row is factored in the space becomes cramped, so better not to try to make your passengers squeeze, and lose out on cargo room. When the third row is down the space becomes more manageable.

What should you compare it to: Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-50.

How much does it cost: The base price is $28,880. The R-Line starts at $40,000.
