How it looks when you see on the street: The Taos is a brand new compact SUV that has a strong stance that tapers into a streamlined convex rear introduced for the 2022 model year. For fans of the VW brand, the face and exterior badging on the Taos (rhymes with Haus) will look familiar as a variation on the face of VW’s SUV lineup. Taos creates an option for the driver that wants to go smaller, but still maintain the cargo space afforded by a larger trunk space. It sold in various trim divided up into S, SE, and SEL at the top of the line.
How it makes you feel when you get in: The cabin is neat, clean, and uncluttered. The CloudTex seat fabric is durable and attractive. Some of the interior materials on the dash use plasticy. To communicate with the driver, the Taos uses digital gauges and a small screen for the UX experience. A slightly larger screen is an option. W-iFi, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a push-button ignition starter are standard features. Active safety tech is not standard, but available options include the IQ.Drive safety suit that builds in forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, active high-beam headlights, and Parking Distance Control. The SEL trim package is equipped with leather and creature comforts like LED projector headlamps, an 8-speaker BeatsAudio sound system, and heated steering wheel.
How it drives: The Taos shines when it comes to zip and power in this segment for its sticker price. It’s engine is a turbo-charged and produces 158 horsepower, which doesn’t sound like a lot but in action is plenty to add zest to the Taos driving character. Its sold as front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicle.
Space for people and things: For a smaller SUV, interior space earns good marks, coming close to the next largest Tiguan SUV.
Fuel Economy: The Taos is a gasoline-powered small SUV that makes 28 miles per gallon in the front wheel drive model and 25 miles per gallon in all-wheel drive.
How much does it cost: Pricing for the base model starts at $23,295 and $31,800 for the SEL model.
