Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

How it looks when you see on the street: The Outlander has capable SUV vibes. It’s layered grille and headlamps give it a pinstriped effect.

How it makes you feel when you get in: Mitsubishi has upped its game on the interior using richer materials and a more harmonious design scheme.

How it drives: The hybrid engine includes a 120-volt charging cable that can be used on a DC fast charger — which gives it an edge for public charging situations. Zero emission on battery power for 38 miles of range and 26 miles per gallon when gasoline alone for a combined 64 miles per gallon. It makes a combined 248 horsepower. To drive it, you can use paddles to adjust brake regeneration. Ride is a bit brisk.

Space for people and things: It has a third row — but only suited for the smallest passengers. Cargo space and front cabin is roomy.

How much does it cost: The base price is about $46,000 and our test vehicle was priced at $50,880 with the addition of synthetic leather door inserts, a heads-up display, massaging seats, heated steering and a Bose 9-speaker sound system.
