Mazda CX-90

How it looks when you see on the street: The Mazda CX-90 entered the mid-sized SUV market in 2023 model year as a vibe setter for Mazda – a full-size SUV that replaced the CX-9 and with a new design aesthetic that Mazda designates as its new flagship look. Its a three-row SUV aimed squarely at families and parties of five or more. That design language endures in our recent test of the CX-90 on a wintery jaunt to the countryside. ItThe exterior of the CX-90 projects a sense of elegance.

How it makes you feel when you get in: At first glance, the CX90 the white leather on our test model projected an upscale look at first glance. Mazda has been refining its interiors and takes a step forward with well appointed materials in the CX-90. Infotainment on the Premium model projects on a 12.3-inch touchscreen. It had a substantial 12-speaker Bose audio system. Safety features include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and a 360-degree camera.

How it drives:  Mazda offers three engine variants of the CX-90 — two gas selections and one-plug in hybrid. We drove the turbo-charged hybrid model that that produces 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and earns on average 25 miles per gallon. Another alternative is the plug-in hybrid model that has 25 or 26 miles of electric range and recharges using a 7.2-kW onboard charger. Using gas it earns a 25 mpg for a combine 56 mpg. Across the board, the CX-90 has Mazda’s best characteristics — a responsive, dynamic ride that handles with grace, a Mazda calling card that’s long given it an edge among in the know car shoppers.

Space for people and things: The third row accomodates a crew in a pitch, but the third row is tight for full size passengers. For a daily driver, first and second row are more spacious.

What to compare it to: Toyota Highlander, Ford Bronco, Kia Telluride.

How much does it cost: The Premium Plus model we recently drove was priced at $58,900, consistent with years past. The base model starts at $53,125.
